The Iowa DNR has a confirmed sighting of a Mountain Lion that was seen in the northwest portion of Indianola this week, the second such sighting of a big cat in the last two years. Iowa DNR Fur Biologist Vince Evelsizer tells KNIA News Mountain lions are typically very secretive and avoid humans, their main prey item is deer and this cat will likely move on in search of new territory. Evelsizer also said encountering a mountain lion is a rare event, and if you are planning on taking advantage of the trails and parks in Warren County, keep safety in mind.

“We encourage folks to take some common sense measures. So if you go out during low light either early in the day or at night running, biking, or hiking, have a light with you. Keep your eyes open, look around, be aware of your surroundings. If you have ear buds or something like that, it might be a good idea to keep one ear open to hear things around you, and just look around often.”

Evelsizer also said if you see a mountain lion, to contact the Iowa DNR as soon as it is safe to do so.
