In the second year of girls wrestling in Iowa, many local athletes are heading back to Coralville, while a few will also make their debut among the state’s best. A pair of Super Regional qualifiers were hosted by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union Friday at Hy-Vee Hall in Des Moines, which featured all Marion and Warren County competitors.

Pella highlighted the day in Region Three with two tournament champions, as seniors Emmalee Spurgeon (155) and Elaine Babcock (190) swept their way back to XTREAM Arena after earning bids last year. The duo will be joined by Serenity Turner, who placed 3rd at 105. The Knoxville student who competes with the Dutch had an otherwise dominating day outside of a loss to Brianna Wolfer of Albia; Turner won her four matches with an average pinfall time of 29 seconds per contest. Pella’s 99 team points were 6th best in the field.

Madilyn Rowson of Pleasantville fought through the difficult 155 pound bracket to earn her way back to Coralville. Rowson’s lone loss came to regional champion Spurgeon of Pella, and Madilyn earned a pinfall in the 3rd place match to return to state for back-to-back seasons.

In Region 4, Siera Becker of Indianola battled to a 2nd place finish at 100 pounds in her freshman season after finding success in the middle school ranks last winter. The freshman Becker fell to Katie Biscoglia of Raccoon River Northwest in the finals after an otherwise dominant showing. Becker has high expectations heading into next week after a successful regular season.

It came down to the 4th place finals for another Warren County freshman, as Madison Froehle of Norwalk competed in the same difficult 100 pound regional as Becker. Froehle outlasted McKenzie Brennecke of Valley 8-2, after the Warriors 9th grader battled all the way back from an opening round loss.

Hear interviews from the state qualifiers from Pella, Pleasantville, Indianola, and Norwalk this coming Tuesday on KNIA/KRLS during Today’s Lely Radio Sports Page, which airs at approximately 8:20 a.m., 1:20 p.m., and 4:20 p.m.

Glorious Fridley of Southeast Warren (155) is returning to Coralville after a 3rd place finish. Makenna Fetters of Martensdale-St. Marys was also a 3rd place finisher in the regional in the 235 weight division. Riley Gach of Carlisle qualified by winning her 4th place match at 100 pounds in the region 3 bracket.
