As legendary former NFL coach Bum Phillips once said, “Winning is only half of it. Having fun is the other half.”
A similar approach is being taken by the Pella Christian track and field teams this season. The Eagles had plenty of success last year, including a Boys State Champion in the Discus and a fifth place finish at State for the girls team. While adding to those accomplishments is something Pella Christian would like to do this season, head coach Keith Anderson says his biggest goal for this year is making sure the kids find joy in the program.
“I want kids to have fun. I want this to be a program where you can come out and maybe you’re not the fastest, maybe you can’t jump the highest or throw the farthest, but I want it to be one where you feel like you’re cared about and that the coaches really do want to see you be successful. And that’s going to mean different things for different kids. Going to State just isn’t going to happen for some kids, but they might improve upon a time, might drop some seconds, might drop tenths off of a sprint. So, I want it to be fun and I want it to be one where you feel like you’re cared about and the rest of it all will fall into place from there.”
The Pella Christian track and field teams open their seasons on Tuesday, March 26th.
