Pella Regional Health Center now offers iovera°, a safe, non-surgical treatment that uses targeted cold therapy to stop nerves from sending pain signals.

The procedure has been shown to provide long-lasting pain control for osteoarthritis of the knee, or for patients undergoing total knee replacement, and helping to reduce opioid consumption without permanent damage to nerve structure. The iovera° procedure uses a small needle inserted into the skin to deliver precise, controlled doses of cold directly to the targeted nerves. This immediately blocks the nerve from sending pain signals. The iovera° treatment takes about 30 minutes and most patients have relief from pain for up to 90 days after treatment.

Candidates for a partial or total knee replacement may benefit from an iovera° procedure before surgery. Pella Regional orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Nathan Nicholson works closely with Pain Specialist Andy Johnson to schedule patients for the procedure prior to surgery.
