The #7 moment for Knoxville in our top ten countdown is early in the track and field season. During her brilliant track and field career, Ciara Heffron set numerous records in the discus. During her junior season she set the record and then broke it three more times and on March 19th, in the Panthers first outdoor meet of the season at Simpson College, she broke her own record throwing 141 feet three inches and in doing so automatically qualified for the Drake Relays setting a Blue Standard. A few week’s later Heffron appeared on a segment of Today’s Lely Radio Sports Page and told KNIA/KRLS Sports she was looking forward to performing at Drake.
Heffron: “I’m just excited to go and compete there, anytime you get to compete at Drake it’s always exciting. Anytime you throw a PR that means you’re progressing.”
Heffron would finish 3rd at the Drake Relays. She would go on to easily win the discus in the South Central Conference Meet, and qualified for the State Meet, more on that later in the countdown. Heffron will further her throwing career at the University of Northern Iowa.
