The Newton School Board tonight will be asked to Finalize Construction documents for improvements to Aurora Heights Elementary School and a sale date for $10,000,000 in School Infrastructure Sales, Services, and Use Tax Revenue (SAVE) bonds. Those items highlight the agenda for tonight’s 6:30 p.m. school board meeting at the EJH Beard Administration Center on 1st Avenue West. The renovation and construction of an addition to Aurora Heights Elementary to accommodate up to 500 Kindergarten through 4th grade students is part of the school district’s plan to transition to two elementary schools instead of four. Three elementary schools are being used this school year. Students attended all four elementaries this past school year. The Newton School Board has approved the construction documents for an addition and renovation at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School at their last meeting. Rachelle Hines of FRK Architect and Engineers of West Des Moines, the lead on both elementary school projects, said bids for the Thomas Jefferson project will be due September 26th, with the Board of Education hopefully awarding the construction contract on September 30th. That project is expected to be completed over two summers. If the Newton School Board approves tonight, the bids for the bonds to pay for a percentage of the construction at both elementary schools will be due and opened on September 23, 2024.
