A Warren County man convicted of first degree murder in 2023 has had his conviction upheld by the Iowa Court of Appeals as announced earlier this week. Antonio Lewis, age 38 of Norwalk, was arrested in 2022 for the murder of 31-year-old Karisa Shendelman, who was found dead from multiple stab wounds.
In the appeals argument, Lewis stated he fought an intruder who stabbed Shendelman, and after the intruder fled, called his brother and then emergency services. However, evidence produced by the state shows Lewis calling his brother six times before eventually calling emergency services over a half-hour later, and emergency responders noted the body was cold and in stages of rigor mortis, among other evidence.
The Iowa Court of Appeals upheld the conviction, with the sentence of life in prison without parole.
