
The Newton girls wrestling team placed 7th in the eight team field that participated in the regional state qualifying tournament at South Tama on Friday. The Cardinals had no wrestlers finish in first or second place in their respective weight classes and advance to the State Tournament. Kylee Adams just missed a berth at State by finishing third at 105 pounds and five other Newton wrestlers placed fourth, including Stella Cupples at 115 pounds, Julianna Maldonado-Hidalgo at 120 pounds, Johana Cerna at 125 pounds, Kamiya Lepley at 145 pounds, and Ashlyn Van Manen at 190 pounds. With Friday’s results, the Newton girls wrestling season comes to an end, and the program will graduate five seniors in Kylee Ashley, Jeralys Casanova Oquendo, Cupples, Alexis Kephart, and Ella Machin.
Today, the Newton boys and girls bowling teams compete at home against Ballard at Cardinal Lanes at 9 a.m, while the Cardinals boys wrestling team and the NCMP boys swimming squad are also in action today at their respective conference meets. The boys wrestlers compete at Dallas Center-Grimes High School at 10 a.m., and the swim team is in action in Boone at noon.
