Jasper County Habitat for Humanity has not been able to assist a Jasper County resident in becoming a homeowner in the last five years, but the organization’s Community Partnership Coordinator Becca Decker hopes to change that in 2025.

“We are really hoping to get a homebuyer lined up for this year to start building in the fall. Then get the next  two for the three lots we have next year.”

Decker has been with Jasper County Habitat for Humanity for almost a year, and says all three building lots they have are in Newton and were donated to them by the city. To qualify as a potential homeowner through Habitat for Humanity, Decker says participants must be low to moderate income, must attend counseling and home repair classes, and put over 200 hours of sweat equity into their home or another Habitat for Humanity Home. 30% of the homeowner’s income goes to the home’s mortgage.
