Newton sophomore Kylee Adams was one of the most consistent wrestlers on this year’s Newton girls wrestling team.

Adams posted the highest winning percentage among the Cardinals’ wrestlers who competed in over 15 matches, recording victories in 83% of her 30 matches for a record of 25-5. She started the season wrestling at 110 pounds, but was used exclusively at 105 pounds after December 16th.

Adams says she started wrestling about six years ago, when her dad got her into the sport for self defense. She added that she struggled at first, but things turned around for her in middle school.

“Like my seventh grade year I lost pretty much everything. Then that summer I put a lot of work in and started winning more.”

Adams was ranked among the top ten wrestlers at 105 pounds in Class 2A this season, and says that got her noticed at most meets.

“I would see a lot of people staring at me when I was warming up, and a lot of the good girls definitely would like the opportunity to wrestle me.”

Adams took third place at the Class 2A Region 7 Qualifying Meet at South Tama last Friday, finishing one spot shy of qualifying for today’s State Tournament.
