NCMP boys swimmer Finn Martin will go after two individual state titles and be in two of the teams three relays in the finals of the state swim meet today in Iowa City. Martin is the only returning individual event champion at this year’s state meet, as he won the 50 yard freestyle championship last year. The junior had the fastest preliminary time in that event yesterday at 20.34 seconds, which is Automatic All-American status. It was also quicker than his qualifying time of 20.46, and also bested the second best time yesterday of 20.58. Martin also achieved All-American status with the best preliminary time in the 100 yard freestyle at 44.30 seconds, which beat his 45.23 qualifying time.
Junior Ethan Comer produced a personal record and placed 18th in yesterday’s 100 yard breaststroke preliminaries with his time of 1:00.73, but missed advancing to today’s consolation finals by two positions.
In today’s relay finals, NCMP had the tenth best qualifying time in the 200 yard freestyle relay with Martin, Comer, Mack Copeland, and Caleb Punt. The 400 yard freestyle relay of Martin, Punt, Drew Fuller, and Copeland qualified with the twelfth quickest time and the 200 yard medley relay of Hudson Meyer, Comer, Punt, and Evan Marshall had the 22nd best qualifying time.
Today’s finals begin at 12:30 p.m.
