Newton junior Finn Martin is now a three time state swimming champion after winning two championships at the state swim meet in Iowa City Saturday. Martin defended the state title he earned last year in the 50 yard freestyle, winning the event again in a school record and Automatic All-American Status time of 20.19. Martin then claimed the state championship in the 100 yard freestyle with another Automatic All-American Status time of 44.64. Martin also led off the 200 yard freestyle relay team with Ethan Comer, MacK Copeland and Caleb Punt. The foursome finished 10th with a season best and new school record time of 1:27.54. NCMP coach Lucas Warner was part of the relay team that had the previous record. Newton’s 400 yard freestyle relay with Martin, Punt, Drew Fuller, and Copeland took 15th. Hudson Meyer, Comer, Punt, and Evan Marshall placed 20th for the Cardinals in the 200 yard medley relay.

Martin’s performance at the state swim meet made him part of a three-way tie for Swimmer of the Year. As a team, Newton placed 17th with 58 points.
