One bowler from Newton’s girls bowling team is moving on to the State Bowling Tournament in Waterloo, while the Cardinal boys will attempt to make state today. Newton junior Gabbie Humphrey placed fourth in the qualifying meet Monday at Newton’s Cardinal Lanes with a 531 series, advancing her to the State Meet next week. The district champion from Council Bluffs Lewis Central knocked down 617 pins in her three game series. Last week, Humphrey won the Two Rivers conference championship in Oskaloosa with a career high 634 series.

“After Friday I just won the conference and felt a little bit of weight on my shoulders.  But I just had to stay calm through all of it.”

The top eight individual bowlers from each district advance to state, along with the top two teams. The Cardinal girls just missed a state berth, placing third with 2,356 pins. Newton Coach Christie Lester said she was very proud of her team, especially since she had termed this a rebuilding year following the graduation of several seniors from last season.

Lester also coaches the Cardinal boys bowling team, who compete at their state qualifying meet today at Cardinal Lanes at 10 a.m.
