
The Newton boys bowling team took fourth place at yesterday’s State Qualifying meet at Cardinals Lanes in Newton, while the boys basketball team won their last regular season home game against Bondurant-Farrar.
The Cardinal boys bowling team collected 2,982 pins and finished behind Council Bluffs Lincoln, Norwalk, and Oskaloosa. Newton was just two pins behind third place, while Council Bluffs Lincoln and Norwalk surpassed 3,100 and 3,000 pins respectively. The top two teams advance to state, along with the top eight individual bowlers. Austin Kennedy was the Cardinals’ highest placed bowler, finishing 10th with a 630 series. The last individual bowler to make state bowled a 641 series. Ethan Valtman finished 14th with a 624 series, but no other Cardinal bowlers made the top 15.
Hosting Bondurant-Farrar Tuesday night, the Newton boys basketball team knocked off the Bluejays 54-47. The Cardinals took the lead for good at 15-13 on a basket from Landon Bozarth with under a minute left in the first quarter. Newton was up 29-27 at the half and 42-36 after three quarters, before going on to secure the seven point win.
Cade Bauer led the Cardinals with 17 points while Landon Bozarth added 15. Newton is now 11-9 on the season and will play at #8 ADM (16-4) Thursday night at 7 p.m.
