The Newton girls basketball team opens tournament play tonight hosting Boone in a Class 4A Region 6 Quarterfinal game. The 10-11 Cardinals are the third seed in Region 6 while Boone has an overall record of 5-17 and is the six seed. Newton Coach Jake Bennett says the team has had good practices, and knows they need to play well to advance.

“Last year we were a six seed going against a three seed and it was a tight game the entire time. We have the opposite this time where we are the three seed and Boone is the six and we know what that looks like and we are not going to take them for granted and just get after it.”

Junior Tori White leads Newton in scoring at 8.1 points per ballgame. Newton has averaged 40.1 points per game this season while Boone’s average is 31.1. Tonight’s winner advances to the Regional  Semifinal at Carlisle this Saturday.
