Students in the Knoxville Community School District are utilizing the I-Smile at School program.
This is a program that offers dental screening services to students due to funding from partners including the US Department of Heath and Human Services, the Iowa Department of Heath and Human Services, Iowa Medicaid and Delta Dental of Iowa Foundation. The program doesn’t charge families for the services and when they are done they send a letter home to parents/guardians to let them know what they saw during the screening and what services were provided. They also help families find a dentist to provide regular care or fillings if needed.
For this school year the program has had 21% kids in the Knoxville district participate, there were 67 screenings done, and 12 children were identified with urgent dental needs. The value of services this program provided the district with was approximately $4,685.
