The Newton boys basketball team opens postseason play at home tonight against Boone. The 11-10 Cardinals are the third seed in the Class 3A Substate 7 bracket, while the 8-14 Toreadors are the six seed. Despite their results on the season, Newton head coach Jason Carter says Boone’s overall record is deceiving.
“Very similar to the Little Hawkeye, they play in one of the tougher conferences in the state in our class and they are definitely battle tested for sure. So you have to take their record with a grain of salt because they have some really good teams in their league.”
Boone finished last in the Raccoon River Conference. The team’s leading scorer is senior Braden Brooks, with an average of 14.6 points per game. The Cardinals were fifth in the Little Hawkeye Conference this season, with senior Landon Bozarth being the top scorer at 11.6 points per outing. The Toreadors are averaging just over 60 points per game, while Newton’s average is just under 51 points.
