Due to Wednesday’s winter weather, the special Jasper County Veterans Affairs Commission meeting to consider a candidate for the vacant Veterans Affairs Director/Administrator position will occur this afternoon. The special session was originally scheduled for yesterday afternoon, but was postponed.  

Jasper County Human Resources Director Dennis Simon notes two of the five Veterans Affairs Commissioners are on the selection committee that evaluated about 20 applicants, so they are familiar with the person that’s being recommended.

“Having two of the Commissioners on our selection committee, I think the chances of the candidate being approved are pretty good. But in case they have questions or concerns, we want to give them the opportunity to ask before they vote.”

Simon adds the Commission’s chosen candidate will still have to be approved by the Jasper County Board of Supervisors. Today’s 3 p.m. meeting is open to the public and will be in the large conference room down the hall from the Jasper County Veterans Affairs Office at 315 West 3rd Street North in Newton.
