The Newton boys track team begins their season this afternoon at a large indoor track meet at the University of Northern Iowa. The Cardinals return several athletes who competed at last year’s state track meet, including the Class 3A State Champion Boys 800m Sprint Medley Relay team of Nick Thomason, Reilly Trease, Christian Ergenbright, and Caden Klein. Those athletes, along with Alameen Shanto, make up three of the returning members on Newton’s 4×400 meter relay team that finished 5th at last year’s state meet, and three of the four runners on the 8th place 4×200 relay. Trease, Austin Arauz, and Nick Milburn are back from the Boys Shuttle Hurdle Relay that made state last year, but was disqualified in the preliminaries.

Milburn, Trease, Klein, Ergenbright, and Thomason also qualified for state in individual events last year. Klein finished fourth in the 400 meter hurdles and tenth in the 400 meters. Trease placed fifth in the 110 meter hurdles, while Milburn was ninth in the shot put. Ergenbright took eleventh in the 200 meters and Thomason was 22nd in the 100 meters.

Today’s A.D. Dickinson Relays at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls begins at 2 p.m. The indoor track meet features athletes from well over 100 schools of all sizes from across the state.
