The installation of an electrical vehicle charger at I-80 exit 168 in Newton is on hold due to a federal funding pause according to the Director of the Iowa Department of Transportation. Last year the Iowa Department of Transportation said $16-million of federal money would go to install electric vehicle chargers at 28 locations along interstates across Iowa. The BP Gas Station in Newton was one of the chosen sites. $583,500 of federal money was to go towards the $778,000 project. But Iowa DOT Director Scott Marler said during a Transportation Commission meeting this week, the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program is one of the federal programs whose funding has not been released. Marler says federal officials are expected to announce new guidelines for the program later this year.
