The Iowa Legislature passed a bill that contains adjustments to a bill passed last year regarding absenteeism in schools, that requires districts to adopt an attendance policy and, as necessary, collaborate with county attorneys, conduct school engagement meetings, and work with county truancy officers. State Senator Julian Garrett tells KNIA News this year the legislature passed a bill containing guidance for how to enforce the law at the county attorney level.

“This new bill requires the Department of Education Director to consult with the Iowa County Attorneys Association to develop and distribute to county attorneys and school districts and accredited non-public schools, a model policy that county attorneys can reference when determining whether or not to what extent to enforce the Iowa Code.”
