Starting this week, leaf bags are being picked up curbside along with regular garbage in Newton. Newton’s Utilities Department Director and Acting Public Works Director Jody Rhone says this service will continue through the first week of December. According to Rhone, just over 6,400 leaf bags were collected last year. Another alternative for leaves, as well as other yardwaste, is the always open drop off site at the Newton Sanitary Landfill.

“Out at the landfill in the yard waste area you can drop off small twigs 1/4th inch in diameter or smaller, garden waste like pumpkins and tomatoes, leaves, and green grass.”

The yard waste area is before the main gate at the Newton Landfill. Rhone says the leaf bags cost one dollar each and are available at the Hy-Vee and Fareway stores in Newton. They are to be set out the same day as a resident’s regular garbage.
