The Knoxville School Board established and approved a task force that will make decisions regarding the future of Northstar Elementary at their meeting Monday night.
The task force, which includes community members and parents, includes people from a variety of age groups and the list is half male and half female. The group will help in the decision making process on whether to renovate the current building or build new on land that is reserved in the Veterans District. There will be three different scenarios to consider in regards to the future of Northstar: add classroom and gym additions along with fixing deficiencies, full renovation of the building, or building a new facility. The school district has been working with Boyd Jones and Alvine Engineering for an assessment that was done to the current building. Superintendent Cassi Pearson says the task force will now work to bring a recommendation to the board.
“That task force will get started probably at the end of April. Their job will be to bring a recommendation back to the school board on if we should remodel Northstar Elementary or build a new building out on the VA grounds that the city would give us if we choose to do that.”
There are 21 total members who were selected to the task force out of roughly 50 total names that were put in as recommendations from school board members. Hear more about this task force from Pearson on today’s Let’s Talk Knoxville.
