The Jasper County Sheriff’s Department is helping high school students in the Criminal Justice Career Academy at the Newton DMACC Campus get a realistic look at law enforcement work. Jasper County Sheriff Brad Shutts says the Sheriff’s Office and Jail recently hosted approximately 30 students in morning and afternoon sessions. He believes the visits are important to show students what they don’t see on TV, and how many differences there are in real law enforcement work compared to the “Hollywood way”. He also says some students learn better when they are able to actually see what’s being taught. Sheriff Shutts adds that DMACC instructor and former Newton Police Officer Wes Breckenridge reaches out to local law enforcement agencies to ask what the academy program can do better. The Criminal Justice Career Academy program includes fourteen DMACC credits, and introduces students to the field of criminal justice and juvenile delinquency.
