Newton’s girls tennis and soccer teams play today for the first time this season. The tennis team will be at Des Moines East. Cardinal head coach Erick Zehr says the Scarlets are typically their first meet, and a good opponent.

“They’re solid. They have a really good coach who does a good job building his kids up. So they always play us well.”

The Newton girls soccer team travels to Marshalltown. Cardinal head coach Susan Altemeier says the Bobcats have improved significantly in the seven years she’s been involved with Newton’s varsity program, and won last year’s match.

“They played well. So we are hoping to come out and be able to match them, I have every faith in my team that they are going to step up and do well against them because they are hungry.”

The Cardinal girls tennis team takes on Des Moines East at 4:15 p.m. while the Newton girls soccer match at Marshalltown begins at 7:15 p.m.
