The Norwalk track and field girls placed first and the boys took second at the inaugural Warren County Relays on Monday. Both Warrior teams scored more than 180 points. Also on Monday night, the Norwalk girls soccer team opened their season with a 3-0 win over ADM.

Norwalk track squads combine to win 17 events

Bill Buxton Stadium at Simpson College was the site of the first Warren County Relays, featuring Norwalk, Indianola, Carlisle, Martensdale-St. Mary’s and Southeast Warren. The Norwalk girls won nine events and tallied 183 points to finish 46 ahead of second-place Carlisle.

Senior Nyah Hulbert and junior Jillian Hammond both won gold in two individual events and one relay for the Warrior girls. Hulbert won the 100-meter dash in 13.03 seconds and later won the 200 in 28.05. Hammond cleared five feet in the high jump to win on a tiebreaker over teammate Elle Hatlevig, who won the long jump with a mark of 15 feet, two inches. Hammond also won the 100-meter hurdles in 16.15. Ava Carlson added a victory in the 400 hurdles in 1:11.67. Norwalk also won the shuttle hurdle, the 4×800 and the 4×100 relays.

The Norwalk boys won eight events and scored 181 points, placing second to Indianola’s 213. The Warriors’ individual winners included Cameron Thomas in the 100 hurdles (17.3), Daniel Roche in the 400 (50.38), Sam Parker in the mile (4:35.45), Braden Vogel in the 3,200 (11:16.32) and Logan Atherton in the high jump (20-10.5). Norwalk also won the sprint medley, distance medley and 4×100 relays.

Girls Soccer wins 3-0

The Norwalk girls soccer team scored two first-half goals and added one in the second half to defeat ADM 3-0 at Mineart Field. Addy Wood, Olivia Welch and Maya Butler all found the back of the net for the Warriors and Butler had the team’s lone assist. Goalie Katie Liedtke finished the night with five saves. The Norwalk girls open Little Hawkeye Conference play tonight at Newton.
