The Pella Christian girls soccer team opened up their spring season with a 2-0 win at Ottumwa Tuesday night, while the Eagles’ track and field teams first outdoor meets of the season were cancelled due to weather.
Kicking off the inaugural season for head coach Matt Dowie, the Pella Christian girls soccer squad wasted little jumping ahead of the Bulldogs. Just over a minute into the contest, junior Lexi Terpstra got behind the defense and beat the goalkeeper to give the Eagles the early 1-0 advantage. That score held until the 30th minute of the first half, when Terpstra beat a couple Ottumwa defenders around midfield and dribbled past everyone to add Pella Christian’s second and final goal of the night. From there, the Eagles defense took over and held the Bulldogs off the scoreboard the rest of the way. Coach Dowie said that sophomore goalkeeper Julianne Van Grop, who made her first career start in the net Tuesday, made some big saves throughout the night to earn her first career shutout.
The Pella Christian girls soccer team opens the spring with a 1-0 overall record and will return to the pitch on Friday to host Albia at 5:30 pm. Following Tuesday’s cancellation, the Eagles track and field teams will now begin their outdoor season on Thursday, with the girls running at Clarke’s DeWitt Invitational and the boys competing at the Ballard Coed Invite.
