
The Newton boys soccer team hosted their own tournament Saturday and earned two ties against Central Iowa United and Benton.
In the first game, the Cardinals and Central Iowa United tied with two goals each. Newton’s Conner Vest found the back of the net with 59 seconds left to get the tie. Central Iowa United scored first in the game, getting a goal with 17:53 seconds left in the first half. That goal was the only one in the first 40 minutes. With 28:13 left in the second half, Parker Kennedy tied the game for the Cardinals. Central Iowa United took a 2-1 lead with 21:05 left. Vest’s tying goal was the first goal for Newton this year, as the team was shut out in their two previous games.
The Cardinals second game ended in a 1-1 tie after the first half was scoreless. Newton took the lead with 36:49 left on a goal by Aiden Robson. Benton’s tying goal came on a penalty kick with 3:39 left.
The Newton boys soccer team is now 0-2-2 with their next game at home against Pella Christian Tuesday.
