The Norwalk girls golfers will compete in their first 18-hole tournament of the season today, taking part in the five-team Waukee Northwest Invitational at 10:00 a.m. The meet is being held at The Legacy Golf Course in Norwalk and also includes Ankeny, Dallas Center-Grimes and Waukee.
The Warriors shot a nine-hole team score of 178 in last week’s dual win over Des Moines Lincoln, led by sophomore Evelyn Kinney’s medalist round of 39 at Willow Creek. Norwalk returns their entire varsity lineup from last year’s squad, which shot an 18-hole school record of 350 at Copper Creek and placed third in their Class 4A Regional. Additional varsity golfers include junior Addie Smith and seniors Mariola Torro Abad, Lydia Krueger, Ava Garvey and Allison Soukup.
Norwalk coach Steve Wermerskirchen tells KNIA Sports that the team is very motivated to improve and spending lots of extra time on the course after practice. “This group here, they’re like, ‘Coach, let’s go out and do this. Coach, let’s go out and do that,’” he said. “That’s the biggest asset is that they want to get better and they’re not settling. We talk about it all the time: golf is a game of perfection but you’ll never be perfect. They kind of understand that, that they’ve just got to keep working on those small little imperfections.”
Norwalk will compete in three total meets this week, traveling to Ballard for a Tuesday quad and going to the Newton Invitational on Thursday.
Norwalk Coed Track Meet reduced to throws only
Today’s Norwalk Coed Track and Field Invite has been cancelled due to the forecast for cold and windy conditions. However, the shot put and discus events will be held, starting at 4:15.
