The Indianola City Council considered an appointment to fill the vacant city council seat at their meeting Monday, which included interviews with five candidates. Indianola Mayor Steve Richardson tells KNIA News the council was unable to come to a four-vote majority to appoint a finalist to the position, and they will have to reconvene next week to continue the process.

“Iowa Code says that with six council seats no matter what your situation is, you still need to have four for a quorum and four to make any decision. As the night progressed and we went through some different discussions and recesses for a few minutes to let people collect their thoughts, we came to kind of a stalemate. So we decided to put that off to next Monday night at 6pm, we will then pick up the appointment at that point in time and hopefully make a decision.”

If an appointment is not made by April 19th, then the council seat would automatically go to a special election.
