The Newton boys and girls soccer, tennis, and track and field teams were all in action Tuesday night.

The Cardinal boys and girls soccer teams played Pella Christian, and both lost despite scoring first. The boys hosted the Eagles and lost 2-1. Newton’s Troy Ramsey scored the first goal with 26 minutes left in the second half, but Pella Christian tied the game two minutes later and scored the winning goal with 5 minutes left on the clock. The Newton boys soccer team is now 0-3-2 on the season. The Cardinal girls were defeated 3-1 on the road at Pella Christian. Sophia Coady gave Newton the lead on a goal with 19 minutes left in the first half, but the Eagles tied the game on penalty kick in the second half, and then scored two more goals in the final 15 minutes to drop the Cardinal girls to 1-3 on the season. 

The Cardinals boys tennis team hosted Norwalk but fell 9-2 to drop to 1-1 overall on the season. Ethan Valtman improved to 4-0 in combined singles and doubles matches so far this season to claim the two victories for Newton on the day. He first won his singles match, before teaming up with Ethan Freese to win their doubles match.  Competing on the road at Norwalk, the Cardinals girls tennis team fell to the Warriors 8-3 to drop to 1-2 on the spring. Paige Benson and Emersyn Gross won singles matches for Newton, while the only doubles match victory came from the duo of Brooklyn Sterling and Camryn Andrew. 

The Cardinal boys and girls track teams both finished first in the seven team field at the South Tama Coed Early Bird meet on Thursday. The boys accumulated 145 points while the girls reached 190.5. The Newton girls won 12 events on the night, including Lauren Clarke in the 100m dash (12.96), Bella Winther in the 200m dash (28.19) and 400m dash (1:02.51), Tori White in the 100m hurdles (16.42) and 400m hurdles (1:13.41), Abby Bruce in the long jump (15’ 6.25”), the 4x100m relay (51.82), 4x200m relay (1:48.04), 4x400m relay (4:21.83), 4x800m relay (10:36.41), sprint medley relay (1:59.69), and shuttle hurdle relay (1:08.64). The Cardinal boys won seven events on the night, including Caden Klein in the 100m dash (11.30) and 200m dash (22.30), Isaiah Hansen in the high jump (5’ 10”), Nick Milburn in the shot put (53’ 6”), the 4x100m relay team (43.34), the 4x200m relay team (1:29.12), and the shuttle hurdle relay (1:03.39). The Newton girls soccer team will host Ballard on Thursday, while the boys soccer squad will return to action on Saturday to host Grinnell. The Newton boys tennis team returns to action on Thursday at Indianola, while the girls tennis squad will host Indianola Thursday. The Cardinals track and field teams are also back in action Thursday, competing at the Oskaloosa Relays.
