Six Newton High School spring sports teams were in action Thursday.

The Cardinal boys and girls track and field teams participated in the Oskaloosa Relays, with the boys winning the ten team meet with 115 points and five first place finishes, and the girls taking second place with 96.5 points and four event victories. The Newton boys got three wins from Caden Klein, who took first in the 100m dash (10.71), 400m dash (50.27), and 400m hurdles (55.17). Christian Ergenbright in the 200m dash (22.30), and the shuttle hurdle relay team (1:03.81) were the other top finishers for Newton. The Cardinal girls got first place finishes from Tori White in the 100m hurdles (15.74), Lauren Clarke in the 200m dash (25.68), the shuttle hurdle relay team (1:08.14), and the distance medley relay team (4:28.60). The Newton boys track and field team will compete Saturday in an invitational at Iowa City West, while the girls squad is off until traveling to Ames for an invitational Tuesday.

The Newton girls golf team competed for the first time this season on Thursday and placed second at the Cardinal Invitational at Westwood Golf Course. Johana Cerne for Newton and Norwalk’s Evelyn Kinney both shot a 41, but Kinney won the cardback to place first with Cerne second. Addie Ratcliff shot a 47 and tied for 8th, to give the Cardinals their other top-ten finish in the meet. The next meet for the Newton girls golf team is at Urbandale on Tuesday.

The Cardinals girls soccer team picked up their second win of the season and first home victory, defeating Ballard 3-2. Newton’s first goal, and their only score of the first half, came off of a Ballard own goal. The Cardinal extended their lead to 3-1 in the second half, with Aliviah Ross and Riley Plowman each finding the back of the net, before Ballard added their last goal with under three minutes to play. Newton’s girls soccer team improved to 2-3 overall on the season, and will host Indianola on Tuesday. 

The Cardinals girls tennis team lost at home to Indianola 9-2 on Thursday, while the boys squad fell on the road at Indianola 7-4. For the Newton girls, Emersyn Gross won her singles match for Newton in three sets, and Sloan Brodersen and Kaetlin McPartlin won their doubles match in two sets. Ethan Valtman improved to 3-0 in single matches this season for the Cardinal boys, winning his match in three sets. Kaden Marshall and Ethan Freese also won their singles matches in two sets for Newton, while Evan Marshall and Ezra Bartell got a doubles win in two sets. The Newton girls fell to 1-3 on the spring and will look to bounce back on Tuesday at Oskaloosa, while the boys dropped to 1-2 and will look to get back in the win column at home against Oskaloosa on Tuesday.
