Four Norwalk spring sports teams competed on Thursday, highlighted by another first-place finish for the girls golfers and a huge dual win in boys tennis.

Norwalk Boys Tennis defeats Pella 7-4

The Warrior boys tennis team handed Pella a rare conference defeat, winning four out of five doubles matches to defeat the Dutch 7-4 in Norwalk. The two teams split their singles matches 3-3, including Norwalk wins by Braylon Stockwell (6-4, 6-4), Drew Lents (6-2, 7-6) and Eli Mills (6-1, 6-1). The Warriors picked up two key third-set tiebreaker doubles wins from Stockwell and Tyler Stiegelmeier in the No. 1 spot and Corbin Oswald and Lents at No. 2. Wyatt Coburn and Isaac Lors, as well as Ben Swim and Carson Menke, added doubles wins in straight sets.

Norwalk improved to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in conference duals, handing the Dutch their first conference loss in several years. The Warriors will compete at Saturday’s Johnston Tournament.

Norwalk Girls Tennis falls 7-4

In the girls tennis dual at Pella, Norwalk fell behind 5-1 following singles play and lost to the Dutch 7-4. Freshman Logan Geisler picked up the lone singles win for the Warriors at No. 4, prevailing 6-3, 6-4. Geisler also teamed with Ivanna Sherstiuk for a 7-5, 6-4 victory in No. 1 doubles. Also winning doubles matches for Norwalk were Myla Brown and Jacey Crane at No. 4 and Elena Harder and Anna Curran in the No. 5 slot. The Warrior girls are now 1-1 on the year and will travel to Ames on Monday.

Girls Golfers Win Again

The Norwalk girls golf team continued to play well, besting six other schools to win the Newton Invitational at the Westwood Golf Course. The Warriors shot a team round of 171, defeating second-place Newton by 17 strokes as six golfers shot in the 40s. Evelyn Kinney led the way with a first-place medalist round of 41. Allie Soukup placed third with a 42, Addie Smith was fourth with a 43 and Lydia Krueger took fifth with a 45. Mariola Torro Abad and Ava Garvey added rounds of 46 and 47, respectively. Norwalk will travel to Beaver Creek in Grimes for the first of three Little Hawkeye Conference meets on Tuesday.

Girls Track 12th at Northwest

The Norwalk track and field girls placed 12th out of 15 teams at a loaded Waukee Northwest Relays. Northwest won the meet title handily with 158 points while the Warriors scored 29. Freshman Elle Hatlevig was the team’s top point winner on the night. She placed second in the high jump, clearing four feet, 10 inches, and took fifth in the long jump with a mark of 16’-3”. Jillian Hammond tied for sixth in the high jump (4’-8”) and teamed with Ella Johnson, Kaia Stoulil and Leah Crick for fifth place in the shuttle hurdle relay. The distance medley relay team of Kinzie Giesemann, Mary Bush, Avery Kelderman and Olive DeRocher placed sixth. Norwalk will compete in Saturday’s Jim Duncan Relays at Drake Stadium.
