Central Rolls to Knox Invitational Men’s Golf Title
Central College placed three players in the top 10 and secured its second men’s golf championship in five days at the Knox College (Ill.) Invitational on Sunday.
While encountering less accommodating scoring conditions as winds picked up, the Dutch expanded their 3-shot first-round lead to win at 288-303–591. The victory at Knox comes after Central finished first at the Central Shootout in Pella on Tuesday. Carter Yurgae, who was Central’s #5 scorer Saturday with an 80, defied the conditions with Sunday’s best score, a career-low 69, 3-under par. No other player shot better than 74 on the day. Yurgae tied for sixth overall at 149. Blake Wynn was Central’s top overall finisher, tying for fourth at 72-76–148. Maison Brandt tied for ninth at 72-79–151, Crew Klingner tied for 11th at 73-79–152 and Kayden Pendergrass tied for 14th at 71-82–153. Playing as an at-large entrant, Cooper Langfelt shot 91-85–176.
The Dutch will compete in a new tourney on their schedule on Friday and Saturday, going to the Bobby Krig Invitational hosted by Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.).
Central Takes 14th in Strong Illinois Wesleyan Women’s Golf Field
Battling winds whipping across the par-72 Ironwood Golf Course, Central College women’s golf team finished 14th with a 328-355–683 in the 21-team, 36-hole Kathy Niepagen Spring Fling on Sunday. Allie Pfantz carded a 79-88–167, while Lydia Grond shot 80-88–168. Parker Stout recorded an 84-86–170 at the tourney, while Amber Timmer shot 85-93–178, and Mickey Martens shot 89-93–182. The tournament marked the official end of the abbreviated spring season, as the Dutch were originally slated to play host to a tournament on April 26th-27th, but will instead stage an intrasquad event. The team graduates three players in Grond, Stout and Sophie Lunning.
