The Newton Fire Department is looking into what caused a fire Sunday night that destroyed a large section of the Moose Lodge on the southwest edge of town.

Jasper County Dispatch says the first call about the fire came in at 9:55 Sunday evening. Newton FIre Chief Jarrod Wellik says most of the roof was on fire when firefighters arrived, and a larger portion of the  roof had already collapsed. He noted that the wind helped the fire spread quickly. A number of area fire departments assisted the Newton FIre Department in fighting the fire. The last firefighters at the scene were with a Newton Fire Department Engine, and left the Moose Lodge at 5:21 this morning.

The Moose Lodge in Newton was built in 1948. It’s located at 2233 South 24th Avenue West in Newton.
