The City of Newton is getting three new police SUVs. One will replace a patrol unit that was damaged beyond repair in an accident March 22nd, while an officer was responding to a police pursuit on the west side of town. The police unit and two other vehicles collided at 1st Avenue West and West 8th Street. The two other Newton Police SUVs being replaced have reached the end of their daily patrol life, according to Newton City Administrator Matt Muckler.
Three 2025 Ford Police Interceptor SUVs are being purchased from Stivers Ford of Waukee, at the state bid price for police emergency vehicles. Muckler says the three vehicles are available for immediate delivery and would not incur the price increase set to take effect July 1. The combined purchase price is $140,970, with an additional estimated $25,000 for removing and installing emergency equipment on two of the replacement units. The city will use an insurance payout of $46,990 for the wrecked police unit towards the payment, along with $118,980 of bond revenue.
