The future of a proposed indoor recreation center will be decided by the Pella City Council at a public hearing this Tuesday.
Several agenda items deal with the facility that at its full buildout, would include multiple gymnasiums, a competition swimming pool, new recreational pool to replace the current facility, and other fitness-related items located north of the current Pella Sports Park.
The council will first hear a financial overview as it relates to the proposed facilities projects in the City of Pella, including upcoming renovations to the Pella Community Center. A feasibility study is also listed under petitions and communications, which highlights projected costs of operating the indoor recreation facility and the impact a proposed $1 million sharing agreement with the Pella Community School District would have on those expenses.
There are two resolutions also up for consideration, including that 28E agreement with the schools and another for financing the indoor recreation center with the fundraising non-profit organization Pella Rec.
A public hearing will then be held for the project contract itself. Several bids came in below engineer’s estimates, with the low base number coming from Bi-State Contracting of West Burlington at $24.5 million ($28 million was the estimated cost) and the full project low bid coming in at $30.5 million from Stahl in Grimes ($36.1 million was the estimate).
Details about all of the above agenda items can be found here. The Pella City Council meeting begins at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Pella Public Safety Complex.
