The Newton girls golf team beat Urbandale and Des Moines East Monday, while the Newton boys track and field team placed third at the Norwalk Boys Varsity Invitational. 

The Cardinals girls golf team produced four of the six medalists as they shot a 197 and won at Urbandale Golf and Country Club. Urbandale was second at 224. Addie Ratcliff paced Newton with a 48, and placed second. Eva Pak was third with a 49, while Johana Cerna and Kalleigh Berndt both shot 50 and were scored fifth and sixth. 

The Cardinal boys track and field team collected 14 top five finishes and scored 107 points. Newton’s shuttle hurdle relay (1:01.89) and sprint medley relay (1:35.28) each finished in first place, while Nick Thomason tied for first in the 200 meter dash (23.39). Thomason also placed second in the 100 meter dash (10.90), Reilly Trease was second in the 110 meter hurdles (14.92), and Isaiah Hansen tied for second in the high jump (5’ 10”). Ali Yahia placed third in the 400 meter dash (54.59) and so did the Cardinals 4×800 meter relay team (9:11.51). Fourth place finishes came from Lance Zaabel in the 3200 meter run (10.39.16), Zach Felton in the discus (129’ 09”), and Austin Araz in the 400 meter hurdles (1:01.28). Caden Klein was fifth in the 400 meter hurdles (1:03.23) while Cade Bauer finished fifth in the high jump (5’ 08”). 

The Newton boys track and field team will be back in action at 4:30 this afternoon at the Chariton Charger Boys Varsity Invite, while the Cardinals girls golf team participates in the first Little Hawkeye Conference meet in Oskaloosa at 1 p.m. today.
