The Pella Christian girls tennis remained unbeaten with a sweep over Saydel Monday evening, while the Eagles boys soccer squad dropped their first game of the spring with a 4-1 loss against Knoxville.

The Pella Christian girls tennis squad won all six of the singles matches on the night, but the five doubles matches were called off due to rain. Reagan DeVries gave the Eagles a 6-2, 6-3 victory at #1 singles, while Ava Breems added a 6-3, 6-4 win at #2. Addie Van Arendonk cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory at #3 singles, while Renae VanWyk conceded just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 victory at #4 and Kate Braafhart added a 6-3, 6-3 win at #6. In the lone three set match of the night, Lexi Branderhorst dropped the first set 7-6 at #4 singles, before rallying to win the second set 6-2 and the tiebreaker set 11-9 to complete the sweep. With the victory, the Pella Christian girls improved to 4-0 overall on the season.

On the soccer pitch, the Eagle boys and Knoxville played even through the opening 25 minutes of action, before the Panthers found the back of the net for the only goal of the first half in the 27th minute. Knoxville further extended their lead after halftime with a goal in the 48th minute, before a Pella Christian own goal pushed the deficit to 3-0 in the 53rd minute. The Eagles got one of those goals back in the 71st minute, when Nathan Brouwer’s free kick found Ethan Van Arendonk at the top of the box, and Van Arendonk found the right side of the net to cut the deficit back to two. The Panthers added the game’s final goal in the 74th minute, dropping Pella Christian to 4-1 overall on the spring.

The Eagles girls tennis squad will look to start their season 5-0 for the second time in three years today at Norwalk at 4:15 pm, while the boys soccer team will try to bounce back today at the Pella Sports Park against Dallas Center-Grimes at 5:45 pm.
