Newton Spring Sports Update – 4-16-25

Newton Tennis Teams Pick Up Wins Tuesday Against Oskaloosa

The Newton boys tennis team hosted Oskaloosa and won all eleven matches in two sets. The singles victories came from Ethan Valtman, Ezra Bartell, Kaden Marshall, Ethan Freese, Damien Smith, and Brady Swihart. The winning doubles pairings were Valtman and Freese, Bartell and Evan Marshall, Smith and Kaden Marshall, Gentry Swarts and Garrett Crandall, and Noah Tremel and Zane Munger. The Cardinal boys tennis team is now 2-2, and will play at Waverly-Shell Rock Thursday. 

The Cardinals girls tennis team edged Oskaloosa on the Indians home courts 6-5. It was the team’s first win since their season opening 11-0 road victory at Des Moines East on March 31st. Newton won five of the six singles matches, with victories coming from Paige Benson, Brooklyn Sterling, Morgan Frehse, Sloan Brodersen, and Emersyn Gross. The only doubles victory for the Cardinals was a three set win by Keatlin McPartlin and Frehse. The Newton girls tennis team is now 2-3, and will host Pella on Thursday, April 24th.

Newton Golf Teams Fourth and Fifth After Tuesday’s First Little Hawkeye Conference Meet

The Newton girls golf team placed 5th in the six team field at the first Little Hawkeye Conference Golf Meet, while the boys were fourth in their four team field. 

In Grimes, the Cardinal girls shot 405, while Norwalk had the lowest score at 366. Eva Pak and Johana Cerna both shot a 97 for Newton, with Pak placing 12th and Cerna finishing in 14th. Addie Ratcliff was 21st with 103, while Addison Ratcliff was 24th at 108, Evie Main was 28th at 111, and Kalliegh Bernt was 31st at 114. 

The first Little Hawkeye Conference Golf Meet for the four boys teams was at Oskaloosa, and Newton placed fourth with a score of 340. Pella Christian topped the field at 306. Jackson Price led the Cardinals on the day, getting fifth with a score of 77. Peyton Rozendaal was 15th with an 86. Newton also claimed the 17th through 20th spots with Mason Smith’s 88, Grant Osby’s 89, and Lincoln Peterson and Ethan Pageler’s 91’s.

The Newton girls golf team’s next event is the Toni Dickey Invite Thursday in Ankeny, while the Cardinal boys will be at Pella next Tuesday.

Newton Soccer Teams Lose To Indianola Tuesday 

Both Cardinals soccer teams were beaten by Indianola Tuesday. The Newton girls gave up a goal in the game’s 72nd minute to fall 1-0 at home. Cardinals goalie Addyson Cibula stopped the other 16 Indianola shots on the night. The Newton girls soccer team is now 2-4, and will host Albia Thursday.

The Cardinal boys were shut out on the road at Indianola 7-0, suffering their fourth loss of the season. In three of the losses Newton has failed to score, and have posted just six goals in their seven games. The Cardinal boys will look for their second win on Friday, when they host Boone.

Newton Girls Track And Field Gets Ten Top Ten Finishes In Ames While Boys Compete at Chariton Tuesday 

Newton’s girls track team placed 12th out of 14 teams at the Jim Duea Relays in Ames Tuesday. The team picked up ten top-ten finishes and earned 32 points. Lauren Clarke took second in the 200 meter dash (26.26) and third in the 100 meter dash (12.95), while the shuttle hurdle relay team also captured third place (1:07.40). Tori White was fifth in the high jump (5’ 0”), sixth in the 100 meter hurdles (16.11) and eighth in the 400 meter hurdles (1:13.70). Newton’s sprint medley relay team took fifth (1:53.77), while the 4×100 meter relay team (51.12), and the 4×800 meter relay team (10:16.76) both finished ninth. The 4×200 meter relay team rounded out the top-ten finishes by taking tenth (1:58.12). Find full results from the Jim Duea Relays here.

The Newton boys track and field team participated in the Chariton Charge Invite, but no results were available after the meet. 

The Newton girls track team will compete at the East Marshall Girls Invite on Thursday, while the boys will also be in action Thursday at the Saydel Invitational.
