Jasper County Conservation has turned to a herd of 20 goats to control invasive plants that have been spreading around Ashton Wildwood Park, just off Highway 330 west of Baxter. Jasper County Conservation Director Keri Van Zante says invasive plants like the bush honeysuckle create dense shade, which prevents native greenery from growing. In addition, the bare ground under the invasive plant thickets is susceptible to erosion.
The 20 goats, owned by Finch Livestock in State Center, are being moved around Ashton Wildwood Park in half acre enclosures this year. Through this effort, Jasper County Conservation expects to see increased growth of spring wildflowers and woody plants, which many animals depend on for food and shelter.
