Newton Spring Sports Update – 4-25-25

The Newton boys golf, soccer, and tennis teams competed Thursday along with girls tennis, while the boys and girls Cardinal Track and Field Invitational and girls golf at Colfax were cancelled due to inclement weather.

Newton Boys Golf Takes Second At Grinnell Tiger Invitational

The Newton boys golf team finished second out of four teams Thursday at the Grinnell Tigers Golf Invitational. The Cardinals’ six golfers navigated Grinnell College’s golf course in 331 shots. The host Tigers won the invitational with a score of 305. Newton had two golfers in the top ten: Jackson Price finished fourth with a 77, while Carter Forst’s 80 placed him 7th. Peyton Rozendaal shot an 85 for 12th, Mason Smith was 15th with an 89, and Lincoln Peterson took 17th with a 93. Grant Osby rounded out the Cardinals roster in 23rd with a 96. 

The next event for the Newton boys golf team is Tuesday’s fourteen team Oskaloosa Invite. 

Newton Boys Soccer Shutout At Southeast Polk

The Newton boys soccer team suffered their fourth shutout of the season Thursday when they traveled to Southeast Polk. The Rams used one goal in the first half and three in the final 40 minutes to win 4-0.  Each of Southeast Polk’s goals were assisted. Cardinal goalie Javin Doland was given credit for 19 saves, while the Rams goalie just had to stop two Newton shots. The Cardinals only attempted three shots on goal for the game.

The Newton boys soccer team is now 3-5-2 as they get set to play Knoxville on the road Monday.  

Newton Boys And Girls Tennis Teams Lose To Pella

The Newton boys and girls tennis teams both lost to Pella Thursday 11-0, as neither team won a match. The Cardinal girls fell to the Dutch at Newton’s Aurora Heights Park, while the Newton boys played in Pella. None of the Cardinal girls matches went into a third set, while four boys matches did. Those were the singles matches involving Newton’s Ethan Valtman, Kaden Marshall, and Damien Smith, along with the doubles match of Brady Swihart and Garett Crandall. The Newton boys suffered one other match shutout when they played just nine matches at Waverly-Shell Rock last Thursday, while the girls team was shutout at Boone earlier this month.. 

The Cardinal girls tennis team is now 2-4 and will play in the Knoxville Invitational this afternoon, while the Newton boys are now 2-5, and will play at a tournament in Atlantic Saturday.
