The Newton boys tennis team took six players to southwest Iowa Saturday to participate in a seven team tournament in Atlantic. The Cardinals collected 23 points and came in second to Shenandoah’s 31. Newton won nine of their eleven matches, with #1 singles player Ethan Valtman going 3-0. He won the #1 singles bracket. Evan Marshall finished 5th in the #2 singles bracket, losing his first match and winning his last two. Kaden Marshall and Ethan Freese won their first two matches and ended up placing second in #2 doubles, while the #1 doubles team of Ezra Bartell and Damien Smith took fifth after dropping their first match, and winning the last two. Newton boys tennis head coach Jared Gerber likes exposing the team to competition that’s unfamiliar to them in a post season format.

“A lot of the post season stuff is set up more like a tournament. So I really wanted to add some type of tournament to our schedule, to mimic more of what the post season looks like.“

The next competition for the Cardinal boys tennis team is their Senior Night at Aurora Heights Park Tuesday against Pella Christian.
