The Hazardous Household Waste Satellite Center at the Newton Sanitary Landfill has opened for the season, and the facility has switched to summer hours. The landfill off Highway 14 just south of Newton is now open from 7:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 8:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Saturdays. In support of the safe drop off of Hazardous Household Waste, Newton landfill staff recently finished eight hours of safety training. City staff says the refresher course covered handling items such as pesticides, batteries, and fluorescent bulbs.
During the most recent quarter of the fiscal year, which includes January, February, and March, Newton Sanitary Landfill staff says the facility processed over 5,705,000 tons of waste and kept over 100 tons of material out of the landfill by recycling.
