Newton Track and Field Teams Place 3rd At Grinnell’s Tiger Relays

Newton’s boys and girls track and field teams each placed third at the Grinnell Coed Tiger Relays on Tuesday. The Cardinal boys scored 76 points, while the girls team collected 62.5. The boys had four first place finishes, from Nick Thomason in the 100m dash (11.21), Caden Klein in the 200m dash (21.97), Nick Milburn in the shot put (55’-01”), and the 800m sprint medley relay team (1:32.22). Ali Yahia was second in the 400m dash (52.34), and Cade Bauer took second in the 400m hurdles (57.90).

The Newton girls had three first place finishes, all of which came in relay events. The Cardinals event victories came from the shuttle hurdle relay (1:08.36), the 4x800m relay (10:13.14), and the sprint medley relay (1:53.05). Placing second for the Cardinal girls were Lauren Clarke in the 100m dash (12.86), Tori White in the 100m hurdles (16.05), and the 4x200m relay (1:46.82)

The Newton boys and girls track and field teams are both off until the Little Hawkeye Conference Meet at Dallas Center-Grimes on May 8th.

Newton Tennis Teams Split With Pella Christian

The Newton boys tennis team celebrated senior night with a 8-3 win over Pella Christian Tuesday, while the girls tennis squad was swept by the Eagles 11-0 on the road.

The Cardinal boys won five of the six singles matches, and three of the five matches in doubles play. Ethan Valtman, Kaden Marshall, Damien Smith, and Garett Crandall won their singles matches in two sets, while Ethan Freese delivered a three-set victory. All three of Newton’s doubles match wins came in two sets from Valtman and Freese, Smith and Crandall, and Zane Munger and Noah Tremel.

At Pella Christian, the lone Newton player to force a third set in a match was Sloan Brodersen, who dropped the match 6-1, 4-6, 0-1. Kaetlin McPartlin won eight games in her two set singles match loss, while Paige Benson won seven. Benson and Morgan Frehse had the best doubles match for the Cardinals, winning six games in their two-set loss. 

The Newton boys tennis team improved to 3-5 on the season, while the girls fell to 2-5. The Cardinals tennis teams return to the courts on Thursday, with the boys traveling to Dallas Center-Grimes, and the girls hosting the Mustangs.

Newton Boys Golf Competes In Oskaloosa Invitational While Girls Golf Plays In Colfax

The Newton boys golf team placed ninth in the 15-team Oskaloosa Invitational on Tuesday. The Cardinals six golfers combined for a score of 330 at Edmundson Golf Course, 27 strokes behind Pella Christian’s winning score of 303. Sophomore Jackson Price continued his season-long string of producing Newton’s best score, tying for 7th place out of 90 golfers with a 76. He was officially scored 10th based on the card back tiebreaker. Peyton Rozendaal finished 25th for the Cardinals with an 82. Mason Smith and Carter Forst both shot an 86, for 44th and 46th respectively. Ethan Pageler placed 51st with an 87, while Lincoln Peterson finished 72nd with a 92.

The Newton boys golf team returns to action on Friday at the Winterset Invite.  

The Newton girls golf team was scheduled to play in a triangular at Colfax Country Club Tuesday, but no results were provided. The Cardinal girls golf team’s next outing is Thursday at the Linda Bloom Girl’s Golf Invitational in Marshalltown. 

Newton Soccer Teams Fail To Score Against Dallas Center-Grimes

The Newton boys soccer team lost their third game in a row Tuesday, falling at #1 Dallas Center-Grimes 6-0, While the girls soccer team also fell to the #2 ranked Mustangs at home 10-0. 

It was the fifth scoreless game of the season for the Cardinal boys, as they only got off five shots and suffered their sixth loss while posting three wins and two ties. Newton gave up two goals in the first 40 minutes to the top ranked team, before Dallas Center-Grimes added four more goals in the second half. Cardinals goalie Javin Dolan was credited with 18 saves. 

In the girls game,  Dallas-Center Grimes scored the first goal in the game’s second minute, and jumped out to a 9-0 lead at halftime. The Mustangs added their final goal in the 53rd minute, ending the game via the 10 goal differential rule. The Cardinal girls have now been held scoreless in four of their 12 games, and hold a record of 6-5-1.

The Newton girls soccer team will play at Des Moines East Thursday, while the boys will be in Carlisle Friday.
