The Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation invites the public to take part in a volunteer stewardship event at the Mathes Woodland property just outside Pella on Thursday, May 8th from 9:30 am to Noon.

Volunteers will hand-pull garlic mustard weed, one of the state’s most invasive plants, to help protect Iowa’s woodlands. The fast-spreading weed threatens native wildflowers and woodland ecosystems if left unchecked. After the event, attendees are welcomed to stay and explore the property, which will be filled with spring ephemeral blooms.

The Mathes Property spans 51 acres of oak and hickory savanna, woodlands, and wildflower-filled hills, perched above the South Skunk River floodplain. The land, which is located just a few miles from Pella, offers vital habitat for deer, turkeys, owls, and numerous bird species. The property was gifted to the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation in 2010 by former landowner Harold Mathes and is now actively managed by the foundation.

No prior experience is necessary, and guidance and gloves will be provided. Registration is required, and can be completed by visiting this link. For more information, contact Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation Volunteer Coordinator Kayleen Leetch at kleetch@inhf.org.
