
Newton Girls Soccer Ties Carlisle On Senior Night While Boys Soccer Loses At Carlisle
A total of three goals were scored in the two games Friday between Newton and Carlisle’s boys and girls soccer teams. On their senior night, the Cardinal girls played #15 Carlisle to a 1-1 tie at H.A. Lynn Stadium. Newton’s Sophia Coady, who started the night tied for the Little Hawkeye Conference lead in goals scored, put the Cardinals up 1-0 in the 43rd minute. The goal was her 15th of the season, and came on an assist from Riley Plowman. Carlisle got the tying score in the 61st minute. In ten games, Newton is just the second team to hold the Wildcats to one goal or less. The Cardinal girls soccer team is now 7-5-2.
The Newton boys soccer team had ten shots on goal at Carlisle, but none made it past the Wildcats’ goalie. The Cardinals lost 1-0, giving up the game’s only score in the second half. Newton goalie Javin Dolan had nine saves. In six of their eight losses, the Newton boys have failed to score. Their record is now 3-8-2.
Both Cardinal soccer teams will play Oskaloosa Tuesday, with the boys at home and the girls in Oskaloosa.
Newton Boys Golf Finishes Fourth At Winterset
The Newton boys golf team finished fourth at the nine team Winterset Invite Friday. North Polk won the event with a 302, while the Cardinals six golfers shot 319. Jackson Price led Newton, placing sixth with a 76. Lane Rozendaal was tenth with a 79. Lincoln Peterson and Mason Smith both finished at 82, with Peterson placed 16th and Smith 19th. The Cardinals remaining golfers were Carter Forst, who shot 86 and finished 31st, and Kayden Westland who was 37th with a 91.
The Newton Boys Golf team will be part of the six team field at the Knoxville Boys Invitational at Pine Knolls Golf Course in Knoxville at 9 a.m. today.
