
It was a great day for Norwalk High School athletics on Monday. Both Warrior soccer teams won 2-0, the girls tennis team prevailed 10-1 and the girls golf team posted an 18-hole school record.
Boys Soccer halts four-game slide
The Norwalk boys soccer team got back on the winning side of things with an impressive 2-0 home win over 2nd-ranked (Class 3A) Urbandale. The 4th-ranked (3A) Warriors got two second-half goals from Tavin Ferner – assisted by Eli Scavo and Matthew Lane – and snapped a four-game string of 1-0 defeats. All four losses came against ranked 4A opponents.
Ferner attempted five of the team’s eight shots on goal and Jacoby Robbins collected two saves as part of the Warriors’ fifth shutout of the season. They now stand at 5-5-2 overall and will return to Little Hawkeye Conference play tonight, hosting Pella Christian at 7:45.
Girls Soccer wins on the road
The fifth-ranked (Class 2A) Norwalk girls soccer team won 2-0 at Urbandale, improving to 7-2-3 on the season. Warrior goals were scored by Addy Wood and Tatum Miller. Assists went to Pearl Brown and Wood while goalie Katie Liedtke collected six saves for her seventh shutout of the year. Norwalk hosts Pella Christian tonight at 6:00 p.m.
Girls Tennis routs SE Polk
The Norwalk girls tennis squad did not drop a match until No. 5 doubles on Monday, easily defeating Southeast Polk 10-1. Ivanna Sherstiuk, Julia Palen, Leah Black, Logan Geisler, Kierdyn Stockwell and Naomi Lors all won singles matches in straight sets or by default, including Stockwell’s 6-0, 6-0 victory. The Warriors also won four doubles matches in straight sets with Sherstiuk and Geisler, Palen and Stockwell, Lors and Black, and Myla Brown and Jacey Crane. Norwalk improved to 5-4 in duals. They will now travel to Pella Christian for Wednesday’s Little Hawkeye Conference Tournament at 9:00 a.m.
Girls Golf scores a 332 at Jester Park
For the third time this season, the Norwalk girls golf team broke their 18-hole scoring record as part of a second-place finish at the Johnston Dragon Invite at Jester Park. Waukee Northwest won the 12-team meet with a score of 316, followed by the Warriors’ 332. Norwalk sophomore Evelyn Kinney and senior Lydia Krueger both shot personal-best scores and earned individual medals. Kinney placed second with a round of 74 and Krueger took fourth with a 78. Allie Soukup and Addie Smith both carded a 90. Norwalk will compete in the Southeast Polk Invite at Copper Creek on Thursday.
