
Newton Boys Soccer Shuts Down Oskaloosa At H.A. Lynn Stadium
The Newton boys soccer team scored more than two goals for the first time this season Tuesday, and picked up their fourth win by beating Oskaloosa 3-0 at H.A. Lynn Stadium. The Cardinals and Indians played a scoreless first half. But Newton’s offense kicked in early after the break, with Aiden Robson finding the back of the net in the game’s 42nd minute. Robson also scored the Cardinals’ last goal in the 57th minute, on a penalty kick. He has accounted for half of Newton’s fourteen goals this year. Troy Ramsey made the second goal against Oskaloosa in the 49th minute. It was his fourth score this season.
The Cardinals boys soccer team is now 4-8-2. All four wins have come at home, and their previous victories were by scores of 2-1. They play again Thursday against Clarke in Osceola.
Newton Girls Soccer Team Gets Road Win In Oskaloosa
The Newton girls soccer team traveled to Oskaloosa Tuesday and brought home their fourth road win of the year. The Cardinals used three goals by Sophia Coady to beat the Indians 3-1. Coady leads the Little Hawkeye Conference in six offensive categories: goals 18, shots on goal 51, shots 64, shot percentage 28.1%, assists 10, and points 46. The freshman scored Newton’s only goal of the first half, which ended in a 1-1 tie. Coady was assisted on the first of her two second half goals by Payton Carkhuff.
The Newton girls soccer team is now 8-5-2, and will play at Des Moines Hoover Thursday.
Newton Girls Tennis Goes 1-1 at North Polk Triangular
The Newton girls tennis team participated in a triangular at North Polk High School Tuesday and went 1-1. The Cardinals shutout Saydel 11-0, and then lost to North Polk 7-3. Against the hosts, Paige Benson tied her singles match for Newton, while Morgan Frehse won her match 8-3. Sloan Broderson also got a singles win for the Cardinals 7-5. The lone doubles match win against North Polk was an 8-4 victory for Frehse and Kaetlin McPartlin 8-4.
The Newton Girls tennis team is now 3-7 heading into today’s Little Hawkeye Conference Meet at Pella Christian.
