A highly competitive Little Hawkeye Conference girls tennis tournament on Eagle Lane went the way of the Eagles, as Pella Christian captured the league crown on Wednesday. Pella Christian scored 40 points, followed by Pella in second with 36 points, Norwalk in third with 32 points and a tiebreaker over fourth-place Indianola, and Newton in fifth with 28 points.
The Eagles were led by strong performances in all four brackets, with all four entries placing in the top four. Leading the way for Pella Christian was Ava Breems, who won the flight two singles bracket. Reagan De Vries added a second place finish in flight one singles, Renae Van Wyk and Kate Braafhart took third in flight two doubles, and Addie Van Arendonk and Lexi Branderhorst took fourth in flight two doubles. Breems, who clinched the team championship with her finish, said it was a rewarding feeling to help keep the title on Eagle Lane.
“It meant a lot, it was really fun playing out there and it was very stressful, but it was a lot of relief knowing that all of the hard work we put in this season has paid off.”
Helping lead the Dutch to their second place finish was the duo of Claire Smock and Abby Heitbrink, who took the title in flight one doubles. Pella’s duo of Sydney Namminga and Kytilin Plate added a second place finish in flight two doubles, while Reagan DeJong took fourth place in flight one singles and Addison Van Wyk placed fifth in flight two singles. Smock said with many new faces on the courts this year, it was a confidence builder to be able to score as well as they did at the league tournament.
“It means a lot coming in with a newer team this year, just knowing that we are capable of finishing high and finishing second.”
Ivanna Sherstiuk led the Norwalk girls to their third place finish, winning the flight one singles bracket for the individual conference title. Logan Geisler added a second place finish in flight two singles for the Warriors, while Julia Palen and Kierdyn Stockwell took fifth in flight two doubles and Leah Black and Naomi Lors finished sixth in flight two doubles.
Indianola’s doubles teams led them to their fourth place finish at the conference meet, with Maci Lerseth and Lauren Danielson taking home the flight two doubles title and Emily Allen and Zoey Belt taking runner-up in flight one doubles. Rounding out the Indians day was Paige Dahl and Chloe Chaplin, with Dahl taking fifth in flight one singles and Chaplin taking 6th in flight two singles. Danielson said she was thankful to be able to secure an individual doubles title for the Indians and build momentum for postseason play next week.
“It was definitely a great feeling, and I’m just overall grateful to have such a good team, good partner, and good coaches behind me. ”
Taking fifth place at the conference meet, Newton was led by a pair of third place finishes from Paige Benson and Alexis Dirksen in both of the singles brackets. The Cardinals added a fourth place finish from the flight two doubles team of Morgan Frehse and Emersyn Gross and a sixth place finish from Brooklyn Sterling and Sloan Broderson in flight one doubles.
